Bike Worcester - Out and about!
It’s been a busy weekend for Bike Worcester volunteers who attended three separate events in and around the city on the 8th March. Here’s a round up of what we’ve been up to, to promote, support and enable cycling:
Celebrating International Women’s Day
Bike Worcester Women took part at an event at the Guildhall organised by the Worcester Trades Union Council, alongside other advocacy groups and organisations to mark International Women’s Day.
The history of cycling and women’s rights are closely linked, with the bicycle offering both a cheap and independent means of travel offering greater freedom for women, and was one of the reasons behind the adoption of trousers in women’s fashion - a more practical option than billowing skirts.
To tempt visitors in and ignite conversations, our table was brimming with tombola prizes including bike repair kits, (the very popular) Bike Bus stickers, Pass Pixis and sweets.
One lucky person who subscribed to our Bike Worcester newsletter has also won a £50 voucher towards a new adult or children’s bike from our bike recycling project!
There were some fantastic chats about our upcoming Women’s led Critical Mass Ride, Bike Recycling, Bike Buses (including the upcoming Summit) and Kidical Mass. Positive stories were shared by women, of all ages, using their bikes to travel around the city.
We’d like encourage women to get in touch and to share their cycling experiences with Bike Worcester to be included alongside the stories of more than 100 other amazing and inspiring Worcester women who cycle.
Join us on Saturday 15th March, 10:15 at Cafe Viaduct, on our Women-led Critical Mass ride (all welcome).
Lending a hand at the Repair Café
There’s always a bike to be fixed so we were down at the Repair Café helping people get back on their bike. In the three hours of the session, 13 bikes were seen and repaired, with advice given for additional servicing and spares using local bike shops. A new record for the repair café volunteers!
Repair Cafes are held every 2nd Saturday from 11am to 2pm in the city. If you can’t get your bike to a local bike shop, help may be available at future repair sessions.
Selling spares at a Cycle Jumble
As part of our Bike Recycling project, we take donated bike and fix them up before getting them back out into the community. Sometimes we end up with excess parts and bits and bobs that we can sell on to others who may need them.
Attending the Worcester St John’s Cycling Club event at Hallow was the perfect place to host a stall with wheels, handlebars, bike frames, vintage bikes, cycling magazines on offer. All the proceeds from the event go towards the Air Ambulance and BW are delighted to have gifted the charity £300.
Thanks to everyone who helped out and gave their time on a busy Bike Worcester weekend.
