School Streets

A School Street is a road outside a school with a temporary restriction on motorised traffic at school drop-off and pick-up times. The restriction applies to school traffic and through traffic. The result is a safer, healthier and pleasant environment for everyone.

School Street schemes offer a proactive solution for school communities and local residents to tackle air pollution, poor health and road danger reduction. A School Street scheme will encourage a healthier lifestyle and active travel to school for families and lead to a better environment for everyone.

School Streets are a low-cost and effective way to make children’s journeys to school safer, reduce air and noise pollution, and ease congestion. At a time where local government budgets are shrinking, we think School Streets are an ideal solution thanks to their zero infrastructure cost, and the support and maintenance, which is provided by groups of volunteers from the local community.

Families and children love that their time travelling to school is less stressful and more sociable, and residents appreciate how quiet their street is and how easy it is for them travel during drop off and pick up times.

Worcestershire County Council don’t currently share information on their process of applying for a School Street, but Bike Worcester can still help you prepare an application and offer advice when consulting parents and residents.
