Worcestershire County Council are in the process of developing a Local Cycling and Walking Investment Plan for Worcester (also other areas in the the County) and are currently in the process of consulting on the first stage: the emerging routes.

Bike Worcester volunteers have put together a detailed and comprehensive response to each of the routes, in addition to providing an additional map of existing routes currently missing from the LCWIP (for example National Cycle Network routes in the city) as well as required routes that are missing from the LCWIP at present.

We have been in discussion with County Council officers throughout the process, and have agreement that where individuals are happy to put their name to the Bike Worcester response these will be counted as individual responses.

There are 23 routes in the LCWIP, plus comments on existing routes, plus comments on missing routes, so by my reckoning each person putting their name to the Bike Worcester response counts as 25 responses. I live with a family of 4 (not counting the delectable Olive) so that’s 100 responses.

Supporting the consultation and LCWIP process is the best opportunity we (the cycling community) has had (ever?) to show there is an immediate requirement for better infrastructure for cycling in the city which then enables and encourages more people to travel by bike. By supporting the process we are sending a clear message to County and City Council officers, councillors and local Members of Parliament that, after years of car centric design and investment, it is now time to look seriously at the needs of those of us already travelling by bike, and investing in the public realm to realise the benefits of providing for residents who currently aren’t travelling by bike.

If you have your own comments on any of the routes we will add detailed comments at the end of the document, although at present our understanding is the responses don’t need to be detailed, this from the Council consultation text for each route:

  • Do you agree with the route?

  • If this route was improved, how likely would you be to use the route?

  • Would use the route more often for walking, wheeling or cycling?

  • Any other comments

Alternatively you can provide your own response to each route via the Worcestershire County Council form (see link below).
